How could a common EU policy, which represents a third of the European budget, ignore the plight of workers to such an extent? That is the question posed by 300 signatories – including unions, NGOs, high-profile individuals and academics – in an open letter addressed to key institutional players: European Commissioners, EU Parliament negotiating MEPs, and national agriculture ministers. The open letter, spearheaded by the European Federation of Food Agriculture and Tourism Trade Unions (EFFAT), seeks to influence the ongoing negotiations over the new framework for the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). The signatories are demanding that the payment of subsidies to companies be conditional on their adherence to rules on worker rights.
Negotiations on the reform of the CAP, one of the main common European policies, which started in 2017, have been impacted by the European Commission’s Green Deal, which aims to make the ecological transition a common thread in European policies (see article n°11232).
