Germany: new German government doesn’t envision a break in terms of employment and labor

A rather social message. The first measures announced during negotiations on the new government’s program immediately laid the government’s cards on the table. Angela Merkel and her new ally, Guido Westerwelle, leader of the liberal party, confirmed their commitment and support to independent social partners in collective bargaining. Besides, the Chancellor promised that the layoff permit wouldn’t be more flexible and that collectively agreed sectoral minimum wage wouldn’t be removed. Besides, a mini-reform of the Hartz IV allowance (social welfare and long-term unemployment benefits at the same time) was announced. The beneficiaries can save more than they used to without fear of loosing their rights. Even if those changes only concern a rather small number of people, the Chancellor managed to quiet down the fears of a lot of people who were afraid of the consequences of the liberal party getting to power.
