The third meeting between the IG Metall trade union, the central works council and Volkswagen management, which took place on 21 November, failed to produce an agreement, despite a proposal from employee representatives that could lead to savings of €1.5 billion. As a result, the union has announced large-scale strike action after the end of the social truce on 30 November.
“We will be preparing for an escalation scenario from the beginning of December. If necessary, we will organise a social conflict the likes of which the Federal Republic has not seen for decades,” said union negotiator and head of the IG Metall district in Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt Thorsten Gröger on the afternoon of Thursday 21 November, following an unsuccessful meeting with Volkswagen management.
