Great Britain: small unions are having a hard time influencing negotiations on public sector pensions

Unison members in England and Wales have voted 90.2% in favour of accepting the now revised changes to the LGPS following a ‘yes’ vote recommendation by their union leadership.  The revised reforms now include maintaining current contribution levels for 90% of LGPS members, introducing a 50/50 ‘low cost’ alternative scheme for those low paid who wish to leave the LGPS, and moving from a final salary to a career average scheme. Nonetheless, the effect is still that members of the LGPS will work longer and receive less when they retire.
