Turkish Ministry of Labour has recognised the trade union KOOP-IS within Mapa, the Ikea franchise in Turkey, allowing it to negotiate and sign collective agreements. The union recognition is the result of a campaign that started in 2011, during which the support from the international UNI Global and the Swedish trade unions has been instrumental.
Turkish law seen as unfavourable towards trade union organisations by ITUC. According to the latest CSI poll (International Trade Union Congress) on international trade union rights violations, Turkey came last on a scale from 1 to 5 with regards to trade union rights. The reasons for this according to the trade unions are the methods of dissuasion used to stop union recognition (harassment, intimidation and dismissal of trade union members) and workers’ rights that are not respected even though amendments were made in 2012 to comply to EU norms.
