Italy: protection measures for delivery ‘riders’ as the country’s ruling majority changes shape

As one of the former Conte Government’s final acts before the latest political turmoil, a decree-law was ‘conditionally’ approved by the Council of Ministers on 06 August and finalement published in the Official Bulletin (Gazzetta Ufficiale) on 04 September. Protection cover has been a primary and longstanding issue for the then and current coalition 5 Star Movement political party that sees bike delivery workers as symbolizing the worsening and increasingly more precarious nature of work. Once again in a ruling coalition, this time with the left-wing Democratic party, the newly shaped majority should make an impact on social policies including in particular the minimum salary, which is part of the new government’s program.
