United States/machinists union tries to unionize Boeing South Carolina. The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has approved a request by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) for 178 technicians at the Boeing assembly facility to be able to vote on affiliation with the IAM. If a majority of the 178 votes in favor then salary negotiations will likely quickly follow. The situation at the Boeing airplane (787 Dreamliner) assembly facility is being closely followed by both unionists and Boeing management and symbolizes the ability of employee representatives to unionize within the south of the country. South Carolina operates under ‘right to work’ legislation that is not ‘union friendly’, and which is precisely why Boeing chose to set up a plant in the area seven years ago comprising an assembly facility, a design center and a research union for a total of 2,700 staff.
