Denmark: PostNord Danmark agrees with unions over labor cost cuts

Denmark’s postal operator has concluded an agreement with unions that modify various provisions in collective agreements. Following persistent negative results as a result of a dramatic drop in postal volumes, the operator has sought to ‘normalize’ its collective agreements in a bid to bolster competitiveness vis-à-vis its competitors. As a result of these changes, the postal group will save an estimated €21 million.

“A managed emergency landing”, is how Eigil Johannesen, president of the coordinated union movement PostNord de HK Post & Kommunikation called the agreement signed with Post Danmark in December 2015, although this was only made public this week following agreement from the union personnel delegates. Eigil Johannesen explained that given the economic difficulties that had ensued following the drop in postal volumes*, the group had had the possibility of renouncing 27 out of the 34 local agreemen
