On February 5, the European Commission asked EU co-legislators to remove the customs duty exemption for parcels under €150 and to strengthen customs controls. What is your opinion on this?
Gero Furchheim: Since June 2024, Ecommerce Europe has raised the alarm about non-compliant products entering the EU via marketplaces, often based in Asia. This issue must be taken very seriously. Today, many products arrive cross-border without any controls, with safety defects and counterfeits. It is an absolute priority that the EU and Member States work together to enforce our regulations, especially as these rules already exist. Product safety, environmental impact, and contributing to state revenues through taxation are all commendable goals. However, fair rules are essential. This report shows that the Commission heard our concerns. While we acknowledge the work, we stress the urgency of the situation due to the overwhelming daily volume of parcels entering the EU. Tools ensuring product compliance at the point of origin must also be introduced.
