Almost complete paralysis in the country. Brazilian unions will organize their “National Day of Struggle” tomorrow, Thursday, July 11, after several weeks of nearly uninterrupted citizen mobilization across the country. The aim of general strike is for workers’ organizations to give their support to popular demonstrations and to remind some recent claims, as unions blame the Dilma Rousseff administration for not taking them into account. This day of strikes and demonstrations is organized by all the trade unions in the country: CUT (Central Workers’ Union), Força Sindical, CSB (Brazilian Union Federation), UGT (General Workers’ Union), CGBT (General Federation of Brazilian Workers), CTB (Federation of Brazilian Workers), Nova Central, CSP-Conlutas (popular union, national struggle coordination), Movimento dos Sem-Terra (landless farmers’ movement) and UNE (National Students’ Union).
Brazil: general strike on July 11 to support popular demonstrations
Large unions announced the paralysis of the country this coming Thursday, July 11. In line with the citizen mobilizations organized in recent weeks, the workers’ confederations are calling for more public investments into health, education and transportation. During the demonstrations, which will take place in about 100 cities, the trade unions will also emphasize working time cuts and their opposition to the bill regulating subcontracting. (Ref. 130469)
