The European Commission registered the initiative on Friday 15 May, marking the first step for the petitioners. Their task now is to gather one million signatures, after which the Commission will have to look into the matter, which in this case is a proposal to introduce unconditional basic incomes throughout the EU. The mechanism consists of paying a monthly sum to every citizen, regardless of their job situation and financial resources.
A third effort. After unsuccessful attempts in 2012 and 2013, a group of European citizens have revived the idea of a European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) to start universal basic incomes throughout the EU. The initiative was registered by the European Commission on Friday 15 May, meaning the petitioners can now proceed to gathering signatures.
