The Institute for Employment Research (IAB), in collaboration with Initiative D21—a prominent association of institutions and companies dedicated to tackling the digital divide—has released a study highlighting the disparity in AI adoption between men and women in Germany. Paradoxically, this divide is most pronounced among "digital natives". The authors warn of a widening gap for the next generation unless targeted measures are implemented.
“It is not AI that replaces jobs, but people who master AI who displace those without the required skills. Those using AI increase their efficiency, expand their room for manoeuvre, and improve their prospects regarding job applications, promotions, and earnings,” the authors state. They argue that whether women participate in this dynamic on equal footing or are structurally disadvantaged is a central gender equality issue of our time.
