During a press conference on 31 May 2006 in Berlin, Michael Glos, German Minister for Economy, was pleased with the retreat of unemployment in May, announced the same morning by the national Agency for employment (BA), but said he was worried by the situation on the apprenticeship market. He invited social partners to negotiate the wages of apprentices in order to rectify this situation. (Ref. 06549)
According to the Employment agency, the number of unemployed in Germany decreased by 93.000 in May compared to April, which was quite more than expected. According to German statistics, the gross unemployment rate decreased to 10,8% in May, down from11,5% in April. There were 4,53 million job applicants in Germany in May.
But the number of apprenticeship positions offered by companies, on the other hand, still dropped compared to last year and the shortage of positions could prove more important
