On September 24, 2014, Raffaele Bonanni head of the Cisl union since 2006 submitted his resignation saying his decision was motivated by the need for internal renewal “necessary in these times of political and economic change”. He submitted his early resignation to the organization’s secretariat and nominated deputy secretary general Anna Maria Furlan as his successor. According to press revelations, the outgoing Cisl leader was under pressure to resign because the situation within Cisl has deteriorated due to rumors and accusations over his salary and his “golden” pension.
“My decision stems from the need to rework the structure of Cisl’s organization through open discussion”, and this will serve to ”not only safeguard Cisl but also the country itself, during a time when everything is in flux”, explained the outgoing secretary general Raffaele Bonanni in an address that formally presented his resignation during a meeting, expanded to include regional and confederation leaders. Born in 1949, Mr. Bonanni had not yet finished his third mandate as head of Cisl.
