On the eve of its XVI congress that closes today the Uil called for a general strike, in conjunction with the CGIL who had already done the same, for December 12. This strike action marks a shift in the confederation’s policy that today formally elects its new Secretary General.
“ We believe we have done everything possible to get some answers. A union kept in the dark has no other option than to fight”. This is how Carmelo Barbagallo the Uil Secretary General-designate due to be formally elected this afternoon explained to the press the thinking behind the strike announcement decided upon by the confederation executive on the eve of its XVI congress that runs from November 19 – 21. The Uil had asked the CGIL that had previously called for strike action on December 5 to hold off until the meeting with the Government set for November 17.
