Spain/Minimum salary level to rise by 22%. The government intends to approve, by way of decree on 21 December, a rise in the minimum inter-professional salary that will then come into effect on 01 January 2019, and after which time the ‘SMI’ will rise from €735.90 per month before tax paid over 14 months to €900 per month before tax and also paid over 14 months, marking the strongest rise seen in Spain since the start of its democratic era. This minimum salary increase was meant to have been Pedro Sanchez’s key measure of his government’s 2019 budget that was set to be a ‘social budget’. However his government has as yet been unable to gain enough support to vote the budget through. With his finance law floundering he decided to save the SMI increase from a similar fate by using the decree approach with the ultimate goal of achieving a minimum salary of €1,000 per month by 2020.
