Canada: Ontario expected to reform its labor legislation. Employers’ organizations had been waiting nervously for the best part of a week and initial press leaks had given a glimpse of the reforms likely to come. The Changing Workplaces Review Report was commissioned in 2015. Two labor law specialists were tasked with leading the review on the Labor Relations Act and the Employment Standards Act and on 23 May they presented a series of reform recommendations (173) ranging from recognizing the right to unionize for some professions that up until now did not have that right to recognizing the right for unions to directly access employee contact data in certain cases, to equal treatment for all workers (part-time, temporary, seasonal), as well as including the obligation to provide a minimum level of clarity over working hours and scheduling in sectors such as retailing, bolstering health and safety labor inspections, and both extending certain leave periods and improving their related pay.
