On 18 May, the ILO launched their flagship World Employment and Social Outlook (WESO) report focused on “Greening with Jobs”. The report finds that 24 million new jobs will be created globally by 2030 if the right policies to promote a greener economy are put in place. Despite the loss of 6 million jobs in some sectors, the net increase of approximately 18 million jobs across the world will be the result of the adoption of sustainable practices, electrification of vehicles, and increases in energy efficiency in existing and future buildings. Measures taken in the production and use of energy will have an impact at the regional level. Net job creation will be noted in Europe, the Americas, Asia and the Pacific, to the order of 2 million, 3 million, and 14 million jobs respectively.
In contrast, if business as usual is pursued, there could be net job losses in the Middle East (-0.48%) and Africa (-0.04%), due to these regions’ dependence on fossil fuels and mining, respectively.
As stated by ILO Deputy Director General for Policy, Ms. Deborah Greenfield, a stable environment is necessary to jobs globally. Ecosystem services, the goods and services provided by stable and healthy ecosystems, include among others air and water purification, soil renewal and fertilization, pest control, pollination and protection against extreme weather conditions.
