CATEM (Confederación Autónoma de Trabajadores y Empleados de México) has defeated the powerful CTM (Confederación de los Trabajadores de México) in order to represent the employees at the Nissan plant in Aguacalientes and renegotiate the three key collective contracts. The vote, which was the plant’s first ever secret ballot, marks another step on the road towards restructuring the Mexican trade union landscape in the wake of the 2019 labor reform. Additionally, it reinforces the rise of CATEM in the wake of current political power.
Following a day full of suspense that saw 3,389 votes being cast, the count on 22 September confirmed CATEM (Confederación Autónoma de Trabajadores y Empleados de México) as victorious with 51.5%. This was the first direct single and secret ballot to be held in the Nissan company in Aguascalientes, with this voting method being one of the most emblematic achievements of the 2019 labor reform.
