Netherlands: employers will be obliged to contribute to day nursery expenses

Despite the protests of employers' organizations, employers will have to contribute, from January 1st, 2007, to the child care expenses of their employees. (Ref. 06947)

Since the coming into force of a new law on baby-sitting (Kinderopvangwet), on January 1st, 2005, this contribution –one third of day nursery expenses- is negotiated as part of collective labour agreements. About 80 % of the employers participate freely, but the Groenlinks (Green Party) proposed, in October, 2005, to make this contribution compulsory.
