Netherlands: social reforms at the center of the election campaign

During the presentation of its electoral program, on September 3rd, the Party of labor and progress (PVDA, opposition) changed one of its most controversial proposals, the pensions reform. (Ref 06846)

Instead of having the retirees contribute directly –which was its initial intention- the PVDA now wants to tax from 2011 (at the end of the next legislature) the public retirement pensions of people who get more than 15 000 euros a year from supplementary pensions. The taxation would begin at a rate of 0, 6 % in 2011, then progressively increase to a maximum of 2, 4 % in 2014. Everyone over 65 years old in 2011 would be exempted from the measure, but 80 % of retirees would still be concerned. W
