Spain’s hospitality sector employers’ bodies and trade unions have agreed upon a new professional category that will include online platform delivery workers. Trade unions are hoping that this symbolic first step forward will lead to delivery work finally coming within a collective bargaining framework.
This fresh development was approved by both the FEHR and CEAT employers’ bodies, as well as the trade union federations, CCOO Servicios and FeSMC-UGT, and it represents a step forward on the path towards the recognition of the rights of bicycle delivery workers, who are currently operating within the independent worker status and so paying their own social contributions, and who have been battling for months to secure employee status with online digital platforms such as Glovo, Deliveroo, and Uber eats being their employers.
