As announced at the end of March, all Shopify merchants can now sell through AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Google’s Gemini and AI Mode. How many merchants are doing so, and for what concrete results?

For Shopify’s merchants (Q1 2026 revenue: US$3.17 billion up by 34% year-on-year), the number of orders generated from searches on AI engines at the end of March 2026 increased almost 13-fold in a year (in absolute value, this figure remains confidential, Editor’s note). Since the end of March 2026, thanks to Agentic Storefronts, merchant products can be discovered and purchased directly within conversations on ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Gemini and Google AI Mode. Merchants can do this via their regular administration interface, without any additional integration required. So far, French-based merchants can only reach U.S. users, but we are extending this capability to other markets. The integration is designed to be frictionless. Merchants benefit from attribution on every order coming from an AI channel; they remain the official seller and retain customer relationships and associated data. But for an AI recommendation to become a true growth lever, a completed purchase is required. That is the purpose of our checkout infrastructure including Shop Pay.
