Belgium: bill to encourage the unemployed to create their own activity

A draft law aims at enabling job seekers to keep their unemployment allowance during one year if they become self-employed. (Ref 061171)

In Belgium, job-seekers or people on welfare immediately lose their allowance if they choose to become self-employed. Congressman Benoît Drèze (CDH, Christian Democrat) submitted, on November 17th, to the federal Parliament, a bill which aims at extending the payment of the unemployment allowance or the integration income during the first year of self-employed activity. The allowance would nevertheless be gradually reduced – by one twelfth each month- , to reach zero after a year. If the person’
