Belgium: longer maternity leaves will be possible

Starting September 1st, 2006, the maternity leave for salaried mothers who were in work incapacity during the prenatal leave is extended under certain conditions. (Ref 06867)

If the mother asks for it, the postnatal leave is extended one week, if she was unable to work because of a disease or an accident during the period starting from the sixth week before the real birth date (or eighth week when multiple births are expected) until the real birth date. This modification appears in chapter 9 of the law of July 20th, 2006 containing various provisions (published in the Belgian Monitor of July 28th, 2006, see link below).
