Ireland: new bill improves statutory framework for whistleblowers

Breach.  This system will protect employees from retaliation when they reveal public interest information about a criminal breach about being or about to be committed, an infringement or risk of infringement to the employer’s obligation, a legal mistake, a threat to someone health or safety, environmental damage, public fund embezzlement, an act or omission that is “oppressive, improperly discriminatory, or grossly negligent, or constitutes gross mismanagement,” or any other act that is being or is likely to be deliberately concealed.  The irregularity at stake may or may not have been committed in Ireland or abroad and be subject to either Irish or foreign law.  Besides, the bill gives a wide appreciation of the relation between the whistleblower and the company or administration where it observed wrongdoings.  It can be a labor contract or any other form of contract – written or not – except for a customer or client contract.
