On March 30th, the Parliament discussed the possibility, for the fathers, to relieve the mothers during their maternity leave, if they wish to go back to work before the deadline of 10 weeks term minimum after the childbirth. (Ref. 06327)

The proposal comes from the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD, conservative), from Democrats 66 (centre right) and the Labour Party (PVDA, Labour). It is defended by Aart Jan de Geus, the Minister for Social Affairs and Employment, who thinks that this is an “equal distribution of the duties between parents”.
