Portugal : government and employees hope they can save the GM factory in Azambuja

The group wants to transfer the production of the Opel Combo to its factory in Saragossa, Spain, in order to reduce costs, threatening 1200 jobs. The official announcement was scheduled last Wednesday, but the government obtained a 5 week extension. (Réf. 06628)

GM’s employees in Azambuja are more hopeful now than two weeks ago, when the group announced it would probably close this factory -located in the center of Portugal. The American automobile group informed its staff that it intended to relocate the production of the Opel Combo on the Saragossa site, in Spain, because each car produced in Portugal costs 500 Euros more than in other European countries.
