PSA/GM Alliance: the EWCs and unions of the two carmakers coordinate to assess the consequences of their alliance on employment

Coordination under the auspices of the EMF.  In a press release published today, March 19, the European Metalworkers’ Federation announced that leading figures from the European worker representative bodies of Peugeot-Citroën and GM Europe (Opel-Vauxhall) have agreed, under the auspices of the EMF, to assess the consequences their alliance could have on employment.  “In order to avoid negative effects on employment they have agreed to closely coordinate their approach, to mutually inform one another as well as to carry out joint analyses” the communiqué reads.  Meanwhile, the EMF will soon organize a joint trade union coordination meeting in which representatives from the countries where the groups operate will take part. Not openly mentioned for the moment, the issue of social guarantees negotiated at European level could quickly be brought up, especially since the European trade union and GM’s EWC are used to this type of negotiation.
