Venezuela: new Organic Labor Law and creation of an official pro-Chavez union

Over 5,000 union representatives from all sectors met on Thursday, November 10, during the “Unity Conference” to proclaim the creation of the Bolivarian Socialist Workers Force, a new official union defined as an “anti-imperialistic” workers’ platform.  President Hugo Chavez presided over the ceremony and chosen by unionist to be the symbolic leader of this new organization.  “I am becoming the workers’ leader.  I am now in command of the socialist, Bolivarian working class” he declared.  In addition to the two large Venezuelan unions already in place, the new confederation will defend workers’ rights, wages, stable employment and access to collective agreements.  However, this federation, conceived as a big rallying union supposed to head over the other organizations, will mostly encourage workers’ political participation.  The opposition and independent experts consider that, in creating this union, the administration is violating the Convention 87 of the International Labor Organization preventing governments from interfering with union organizations.
