Great Britain: a new legislation on asbestos is coming into effect

The new legislation concerning asbestos, prepared by the Health and Safety Executive, the national authority in terms of security and public health, will come into force on November 13. The HSE did not just transpose the revision of the European directive on asbestos at work, dating from 2003, it also chose to review and strengthen the existing legislation (Ref. 061103)

A single threshold. The new text, Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006, substitutes for the three former bills made in 1983, 1992 and 2002. It introduces a new exposure threshold, unique for all types of asbestos, lowered down to an average of 0.1 fiber a cubic centimeter (on a given period of 4 hours non-stop) and imposes, as a system to measure the asbestos concentration in the air, the analysis criteria set by the WHO in 1997.
