Italy: steering committee of the CGIL prepares its strategy after the agreement on the reform of the conventional system

Representativeness challenge. The committee approved the rejection of the agreement on the reform of the conventional system (see our dispatch No. 090419) which “represents the unilateral abrogation of the material constitution which used to govern relations between confederate unions.” Therefore, it is urgent for the confederation to resume the initiative to define “clear rules for trade union representativity and democracy.” Gugliemo Epifani, leader of the confederation, talked to the other two confederations – Cisl and Uil – reminding them that every union organization “should account for what it represents.” He pointed to the need for general rules on agreements to avoid individual decisions and repeated that “united action is necessary and demanded by the workers.”
