Italy: the two poles of Italian unionism demonstrated in Turin and Rome on Saturday

“Over 100,000 demonstrators” (police say 50,000) were gathered by the Cisl and Uil on the Piazza del Popolo in Rome on Saturday, October 9th to ask the government for a table on the “fiscal reform” (see our dispatch No. 100637).  The point was mostly to show that they were united against the CGIL with a historic demonstration.  Indeed, for the first time, the Cisl and Uil demonstrated together without the CGIL, defying the latter on its own territory, the “piazza.”  “Together, we represent the majority union” declared Cisl general secretary Raffaele Bonanni at the end of the day.
