On June 19-20, in Johannesburg, South Africa, UNI Global Union launched the UNI Africa Walmart Union Alliance. Unions are denouncing an expansion strategy that is detrimental to local employment. (Ref. 120423)

Continental alliance. With the support of UNI Global, African unions want to mobilize to keep the American retail chain from growing at low cost in Africa and demand the respect of union rights. Representatives from Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia came to the meeting. The new Alliance is calling on the company to recognize international labor standards, particularly freedom of association and collective bargaining.
