Portugal: Minister for Labor and Solidarity from a European trade union

European trade union leader. Maria Helena André was elected ETUC deputy general secretary in 2003, and reelected in 2007. She was notably in charge of European social dialog. The new Labor Minister started her career at the UGT – General Union of Workers, close to the socialist party – in 1981 where she took care of youth and international issues, before going to Brussels in 1988. The name of this woman, about to turn 49, who has a degree in languages and modern literature, was recently mentioned as a possibility to succeed to the current UGT leader, Joao Proenca.
